What to Move Yourself

Anyone who’s planning to move house around the Los Angeles area could definitely benefit fromprofessional movers who know LA. Their efficiency and knowledge the area, including routes and drive times, not only accomplishes the move more quickly than you could do on your own (or even with friends), but it takes a large burden of stress from you.

However, there are certain items you should transport yourself, if at all possible. These are things you want to keep near you, or things which the movers themselves decline to transport. First of all, your personal valuables, including jewelry, lock boxes and laptops should all ride with you. Secondly, you need to pack yourself at least an overnight back, if not an entire suitcase. You might have put most of your clothing into boxes, but a lot of things can happen to keep you from having easy access to them.

Think about what you will really need to get through your first night there, when you’re too tired to unpack everything. You will want toilet paper and paper towels, a shower curtain and bath towels, hygiene items, and a set of sheets for every bed that will be slept in.

Take all your prescription medications with you, and important paperwork. You may also have some items you consider too valuable to go in the van with the others, like artwork. Some items moving companies may not be legally allowed to transport, such as guns, or flammable liquids. For instance, if you’re a painter and store some of your paint at your home, or if you have a butane gas tank for your grill. These things should all be discussed with you by the moving company. If you are uncertain about anything, be sure to ask.

In other words, while your expert movers will transport the large majority of your furniture and possessions, anything that’s really valuable, really sensitive or immediately necessary should remain in your control. Make up a moving checklist ahead of time that includes everything you’ll be carrying in your vehicle, and stack it all near the door or put it in your trunk the night before.
